When Britain got too dangerous for some parents, they decided to apply for the C.O.R.B (Children's Overseas Reception Boad) program that would take their children on a ship to Canada. This was very risky, as German U-boats could torpedo it anytime. And, who knew when the rescue ship would come.
After the 90 C.O.R.B children and the escorts were brought to Liverpool, they stayed there a few days before boarding the "City of Benares". The ship was originally meant to transport passengers to Benares before the war. When the German U-Boats torpedoed that ship, the 300+ passengers went out to sea, in their pajamas, and some with no lifejackets. Some made it, others didn't. Those who were on the rafts or lifeboats, had no idea when and if they would see their other family members. They were in the cold sea for a long time, with scarce water and less food. Completely bored with nothing to do.
My Thoughts
Absolutely one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. This was amazingly captivating (while, in my opinion, some non-fiction books are a bit boring) and I loved how this story was based off a real event that unfortunately happened so I could learn about something in history. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOU TO READ THIS.
