When Bruno's family move to Out-With camp 1943 from Berlin, he was bored until he met Shmuel. They were both born on the same day, April 15th 1934, but the only problem is, Shmuel lives on the other side of the barbed-wire fence, with hundreds of other sad-looking people. While, Bruno has no one to play with, except Gretel, his elder sister who he says is a, "Hopeless Case." Only he doesn't know why he and Shmuel can't be on the same side of the fence, because his father is a Nazi Commandant and Shmuel is Jewish. After living at Out-With for a year, Bruno's mother announces that she, Gretel and Bruno are moving back to Berlin, in a week. On the last Friday at Out-With, he explores the other side of the fence, only he doesn't know what's going to happen.
