"In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind YA fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.
At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England.
Like that could go wrong." (book summary)
My Thoughts:
While this fascinating take on Lady Jane Grey's story may not be wholly accurate (as the authors warn you in the prologue), it brings humour and light to what originally would have been a melancholic story. This quirky iteration of Jane's life is a stark contrast to her reality. Jane's personality and unfiltered thoughts were so entertaining to experience. Jane is a person who will never beat around the bush and won't be afraid to share their thoughts. My Lady Jane shifts between three points of view – King Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey and Lord Gifford Dudley, with each character having an unforgettable personality. There are supporting characters whose personalities feel like they were born in the wrong era, which is thanks to the more modern take on the story. The addition of Edians was also so fascinating to learn more about, probably because of their unique abilities. To be honest, My Lady Jane is long, totalling 512 pages, but I found it worth it (especially with the triple POVs). I'm looking forward to reading the other companion books in 'The Lady Janies' series.
