If you are NOT into dark or scary fiction books, you should probably not even be reading this review. You might think, "oh, maybe in few pages only there will be some scary things that happen to the orphaned Baudelaires." If you have thought that, you are terribly wrong. This series is filled with misery and unfortunate events, except for the rare happy moments! Even though this series is dark and scary at times it is mostly interesting and I have learnt a lot from this.
Because the personalities of Violet, (age 14) Klaus, (age 12) and Sunny (age 4) As Violet is passionate in inventing, her skills were helpful in number of situations. Because Klaus is an avid reader and researcher, his knowledge of many things have helped, too. Sunny, a passionate biter and later developed cook, have helped from biting grip holds in Book 7, or knowing how to cure Medusoid Mycelium because of her knowledge. Even as a 3 year old!
This series (13 books) by Lemony Snicket is not your usual series, in fact this is far from usual. Wherever the Baudelaires' go and live, with their guardian(s), Count Olaf, Uncle Montgomery Montgomery, Aunt Josephine, Sir, Vice Principal Nero, Esmé and Jerome Squalor, V.F.D. Village, or on their own (like getting stranded on an island which follows strict customs that helps them learn more about their parents), trouble and bad fate follows them. The terrible news on that terrible day in Briny Beach was how it started! And all because they had a huge fortune! Mr. Poe surely has done a bad job in managing the Baudelaires' fortune!
I read 13 books in 13 days, I was constantly reading! I read this series , not because it was filled with dark and scary stuff but because the author filled it with humorous and advanced and interesting vocabulary. Even in some of the titles, The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Grim Grotto, The Carnivorous Carnival, The Penultimate Peril. (In each of the harder words, click on the gold part to see the meaning!)
