A Place at the Table

Lexile: 680L

Sensitive Topic(s): Racism and depression

"Sixth-graders Sara, a Pakistani American, and Elizabeth, a white, Jewish girl meet when they take a South Asian cooking class taught by Sara’s mom.

Sixth-graders Sara and Elizabeth could not be more different. Sara is at a new school that is huge and completely unlike the small Islamic school she used to attend. Elizabeth has her own problems: her British mum has been struggling with depression. The girls meet in an after-school South Asian cooking class, which Elizabeth takes because her mom has stopped cooking, and which Sara, who hates to cook, is forced to attend because her mother is the teacher. The girls form a shaky alliance that gradually deepens, and they make plans to create the most amazing, mouth-watering cross-cultural dish together and win a spot on a local food show. They make good cooking partners ... but can they learn to trust each other enough to become true friends?" (book summary)

What I Thought:

I love books with multiple perspectives because then you get to understand each main character a bit more and your impression of the character isn't limited to what the main character thinks of them. (In other words, the main character doesn't influence your pov on them) I've been waiting to read this book for a few months, and am so happy that I finally got a chance. I had tried this book online a month ago but quickly abandoned it after 20 pages. That was the wrong decision but I guess reading a hardcopy and on the internet give a different experience whilst reading the book. This book being centered around food, be prepared to be jealous on those yummy delicious being cooked! I really liked that this book touched on racism (one of the characters made a few racist comments but her parents are racist, unfortunately) and depression (Elizabeth's mom suffers from depression having recently lost her own mother) Definitely read it if you can handle this content.
